Wife (The Lawful Consort Of Man)

by Nevada Kerr

She had no choice
Disused and dispensed with
Thrown aside like a napkin
Time after time

A waif and an orphan cast to the winds
The Heavenly Father absolving her sins
Un/protected by law or merely adrift
Or absolutely yielding to the aims of God's gift

In the man's favor
All for the best
A piece of good fortune
To clean hearth and nest

Found goods without a known owner
Relinquished and lost
Without a spouse to claim her
To waive or to tame her

She came along by chance
Like a homeless child
That he could refuse or abandon
When fair weather turned wild
