TIME GOES BY

by Nevada Kerr

I'm bereft behind this fortress
But I always knew my place
From delinquent dame extortions
I paid dearly to be safe
Advancing by the hour
And never losing face
With all my earthly power
I'll surely win the race

Having money was a virtue
When I was coming up
The underclass could hurt you
The masses were corrupt
You stayed loyal to the family
Who else could you trust
You never married one of them
You were always one of us

But if ambition is the favorite child
Of freedom undisguised
Willful and spontaneous
Liberty gone wild
How did this privilege lead
To practiced self-denial
Here inside my private life
Above the rank and file
