EXTRAS DOWN UNDER NEXT MONTH
29th January 2007

DAVID BOWIE fans Down Under finally get the chance to see David appearing in the Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant comedy series EXTRAS next month.

This new 2nd series kicks off on 14th February, with David appearing on the second episode which airs on Wednesday 21st February on ABC Channel 2 at 9:00pm.

There's a great Gervais interview on the A.V. Club website - one of the questions posed was:

AVC: One of the funniest scenes in season two is when David Bowie writes a song about you in a bar. Did he write that himself?

RG: "He wrote the music, [but not] the lyrics. I sent him the script and I said, 'We thought maybe it could be quite retro, something off Hunky Dory, with an anthemic chorus, like 'Life On Mars.' He went, 'Oh, sure, I'll just knock off a 'Life On Mars.' And I laughed and went, 'Oh, yeah, that did sound quite insulting, didn't it?' He knew what to give us. He gave us über-Bowie. [Sings.] 'See his pug-nosed face' The crew was singing it for about a week."

BOWIE TRIBUTE NIGHT IN BRIGHTON
24th January 2007

THE ARGUS have announced a special DAVID BOWIE belated birthday tribute night taking place on Thursday (25th Jan) at Komedia in Brighton.

A mere 17 days after the former Spiders From Mars frontman celebrated his 60th birthday, a bunch of Bowie superfans will be spreading a whole load of Ziggy Stardust across the city with a cavalcade of Thin White Duke related silliness.

"We wanted to get the date of his actual birthday but Larry (Cream) and Artie (Cray), who are the two guys who run the fan club, are unfortunately in prison - some misunderstanding with tax - and couldn't help us with the booking.

"We still wanted to do it so we got the closest date available. We still wanted to celebrate Mr Bowie's birthday."

These are the wise words of Claus Kuntz (aka our very own Alistair Kerr), Germany's top Aladdin Sane maniac and your host for what promises to be an extraordinary evening.

"Bowie has an affiliation with Germany. I bought the apartment he stayed in when he was living with Iggy Pop. We have some home movie film that comes from when David and Iggy were living together. We found it, restored it and we're going to show it on the night."

Claus is talking about the much anticipated highlight of the show, namely exclusive extracts from a movie entitled 155 Hauptstrasse.

"I was looking down the side of the sofa and I found it. I didn't know at the time what it was, I thought it might be some porn or something," says the unfortunately-monikered MC.

Also lined up for the event is a motley crew of self-confessed Bowie freaks and weirdos.

Starts 8.30pm, tickets £10/£12. Call 01273 647100.

WOODY'S STRAIGHT TALK
18th January 2007

Former Drifield rock star WOODY WOODMANSEY is spearheading a major awareness campaign aimed at helping children stay clear of drugs.

Woody, the former drummer with DAVID BOWIE's band, The Spiders, is now a trustee of a drug rehabilitation centre.

During his music career spanning 30 years, Woody has played and toured with some of the best - Paul McCartney, Edgar Winter, Art Garfunkel and more recently, Joe Elliott and Phil Collin of Def Leppard.

He said that he saw what drugs did to friends in the music business and that it is a very different picture from the glamour fans see on stage.

He has seen musicians behind the scenes crash and burn from constant drug-taking - and is concerned to see how widespread drugs have become over the last three decades or so.

As a result, he became a trustee for Narconon, a drug rehabilitation centre based in Hastings.

"Drug testing in schools is not the answer to the drugs problem," said Woody, formerly of Victoria Road, Driffield. "It wasn't a deterrent in the 60s and 70s and it won't be now."

He said that scare tactics did not work and that it was far better to talk straight with children and to show respect for their ability to think for themselves.

"Effective drug education in schools does work. Fear of being caught is not an effective deterrent," Woody added.

"With the stress on education, one is making an informed choice. It has been found that when people do have the correct information about what drugs actually do, they end up not taking drugs on their own self-determinism.

"The correct target is the kids before they take or consider taking drugs; the target is not after they have already started on the slippery slope."

TONY VISCONTI BOOK SIGNING
17th January 2007

As you may have read last October TONY VISCONTI long-time producer and musician with DAVID BOWIE is to publish his autobiography next month on 5th February.

There will be a book signing session taking place on Sunday 11th February at 1pm until 4:30pm at Corner Store, 33/35 Wellington Street, Covent Garden, London WC2E 7BM. [Map]

Tony Visconti The Autobiography Synopsis: A name synonymous with ground-breaking music, Tony Visconti has worked with the most dynamic and influential names in pop, from T.Rex and Iggy Pop to David Bowie and U2. This is the compelling life story of the man who helped shape music history, and gives a unique, first-hand insight into life in London during the late 1960s and '70s.

Soon after abandoning his native New York to pursue his musical career in the UK, Visconti was soon in the thick of the emerging glam rock movement, launching T.Rex to commercial success and working with the then-unknown David Bowie. Since his fateful move to the land of tea and beer drunk straight from the can, Visconti has worked with such names as T.Rex, Thin Lizzy, Wings, The Boomtown Rats, Marsha Hunt, Procol Harum, and more recently Ziggy Marley, Mercury Rev, the Manic Street Preachers and Morrissey on his acclaimed new album 'Ringleader of the Tormentors'. Even Visconti's personal life betrays an existence utterly immersed in music. Married to first to Siegrid Berman, then to Mary Hopkin and later to May Pang, he counts many of the musicians and producers he has worked with as close friends and is himself a celebrated musician.

This memoir takes you on a roller-coaster journey through the glory days of pop music, when men wore sequins and pop could truly rock. Visconti's unique access to the biggest names and hottest talent, both on stage and off, for over five decades is complemented by unseen photographs from his own personal archive, and offers a glimpse at music history that few have witnessed so intimately.

You can pre-order Tony Visconti: The Autobiography: Bowie, Bolan and the Brooklyn Boy NOW and receive a 32% discount.

Thanks to Sweetythang for the book signing info.

I HOPE I MAKE IT ON MY OWN?
14th January 2007

David with The Lower Third Back in 1966, forty-one years ago to this very day saw DAVID JONES release his first ever single 'Can't Help Thinking About Me' as DAVID BOWIE with The Lower Third', backed with 'And I Say To Myself'.

David with The Lower Third Released on the Pye label (Pye 7N 17020) in the United Kingdom , the single reached number 34 in the Melody Maker chart and peaked at number 14 on 20th February in the Radio London Fabulous Forty chart.

The musicians on the single were: David Bowie: vocals/tambourine, Dennis Taylor: guitar, Graham Rivens: bass and Phil Lancaster: drums. The producer was Tony Hatch.

Four months later the single was released in the USA on the Warner Brothers label (WB 5815). Later the same year, the track appeared on the Pye compilation album 'Hitmakers Volume 4' (Pye NPL 18144), which marks the first track on an album by 'David Bowie'.

David said of the song during an interview for Melody Maker on 26th February 1966... "Several of the younger teenagers' programmes wouldn't play 'Can't Helping Thinking About Me', because it is about leaving home. The number relates several incidents in every teenager's life - and leaving home is something which always comes up."

Japanese release 1972 Japanese release 1972 Six years later in October 1972, the song was re-released as an EP in the United Kingdom (Pye 7NX.8002) and New Zealand (Pye 7NX 8002).

Also the same month, saw the Japanese 7" single released, backed with 'I'm Not Losing Sleep' (Pye/Teichiku UP-408-Y).

Spanish release 1973 The following year in March 1973, saw a 7" release in Spain (Pye 11.603) backed with 'I Dig Everything', complete with as you can see a rather nice picture sleeve.

June 1978 saw a Canadian-only 7" release on the Pye blue label backed with 'Do Anything You Say' (7N8002), there then follows a list as long as your aunty's left arm of compilations, reissues and repackages containing the track.

In more recent times, David re-recorded a newer version of this song - which was first performed live again during the VH1 StoryTellers show - as well as his Roseland Ballroom 1999 gig in New York City.

Something for the trivia anoraks out there, he actually performed a snippet of this song in San Francisco during his 1997 Earthling world tour.

BLAST OF BOWIE
5th January 2007

DAVID BOWIE's 60th birthday special will feature on the Clash radio station.

David hits the big 60 next Monday (8th Jan) and Clash on Red FM gets the birthday candles out early for the remarkable rock 'n' roll star with the changeling reputation and avant garde edge.

Starting 2pm this Sunday, (7th Jan) the Clash crew will trawl through the renaissance man's catalogue, making stops at pivotal points of his career and revisiting practically every era and alter ego of his pop life. From Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke and beyond, the Bowie love-fest is possibly all you could wish for on Malaysian airwaves.

It's also Clash's first show of the year, and what a way to start with a bang. It's everything a Bowie fan needs, everything a Bowie beginner wants - from the early days of Hunky Dory to Aladdin Sane to a whole lot of Ziggy and his Berlin-era favs in the mixture.

PINK FLOYD legendary musician ROGER WATERS has recorded the original song 'Hello (I Love You)' to be featured in New Line Cinema's upcoming sci-fi film 'The Last Mimzy'. The guitarist on the track is none other than GERRY LEONARD (music director/guitarist for DAVID BOWIE)...

Talking of new BW downloads, there is now a free downloadable DAVID BOWIE aka Aladdin Sane face mask that you can download, print, cut-out and stick on your boat race for 'hours...' and 'hours...' of cheap thrills and good humoured fun whilst you are singing 'Cracked Actor' and doing a mime sequence at that special David Bowie themed party you're having on the 8th January ;) - [Aladdin Sane Face Mask]...

Not quite sure what this is for but the BBC website are posing the question: 'Have you met DAVID BOWIE'? - if you have been lucky enough to and then want to show off about it then go here for more details...

Unfortunately the release date of the first batch of six mini vinyl replica releases from EMI by DAVID BOWIE are now scheduled for release on 22nd January and not the 8th January as originally intended. The newly mixed 5.1 Surround Sound has been completed by TONY VISCONTI. He wrote on his website at tonyvisconti.com

'...I've just finished mixing the amazing Young Americans in 5.1 Surround Sound, too, for its 30th anniversary (has it been that long?). The release will be in a few months. There will be bonus tracks and a surprise.

All the tracks have been mixed from the master tapes to 96khz high definition digital audio. That translates to 'freakin' scary' quality. Mr. Bowie is front and center, but the backing is now spread 360º with Mr. Vandross hovering over your left shoulder for most of the album. John Lennon's six string acoustic is almost entirely in the right rear speaker on 'Across The Universe' and you just might hear a comment from him when the song is over. What really brought it home to me was how great David's vocals were, and a lot of them were live takes with him standing in the same room as the band at Sigma Studios in Philadelphia.'
