YOU ALWAYS WERE THE ONE THAT KNEW
30th January 2018

David Bowie June 1974 on the train Some of you may have noticed this previously unseen DAVID BOWIE photograph from 1974 posted online recently.

ELENA MATTIROLO did some detective work and managed to track down the photographer BRUCE VARTAN BOYAJIAN, and received a lovely background story to how the chance meeting and photograph came about.

After three-day rehearsals at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York, David took the train up to Montreal in Canada for the opening show of 'The Year of the Diamond Dogs' tour...

For the rest of the story you can read Elena and Bruce's reply over at davidbowieblackstar.it website.

(Ed. Good work Elena!)

THE FINAL TAKE
30th January 2018

The Final Take If you missed THE FINAL TAKE: BOWIE IN THE STUDIO radio drama broadcast this morning on the BBC WORLD SERVICE you can catch up via the BBC iPlayer HERE

This special drama is an IMAGINED account of David Bowie as he works on his last album, Blackstar, to give a moving and revealing portrait of the star as he reflects on music, love, drugs, fame and death.

Impressionist Jon Culshaw, in a rare serious role, plays David Bowie.

It is 2015, and Bowie is secretly working in New York's The Magic Shop studio, with his long-time producer Tony Visconti. The resulting tracks will become David Bowie's final album, Blackstar, which was released in January 2016, just two days before his death.

The dialogue in this drama is partly constructed from Bowie's own words, taken from the many hundreds of interviews he gave since the 1960s.

The cast are: Jon Culshaw (as David Bowie) / Martin T. Sherman (as Tony Visconti) / Tom Alexander (as Donny McCaslin).

Writer: David Morley and Director: Dirk Maggs.

Incidental music was by Chris O'Shaughnessy and Sandra Mae Luykx.

BOWIE LIMITED EDITION DUAL TONE
25th January 2018

Supro Pays Tribute to DAVID BOWIE with a Limited Edition Dual Tone recreation...

Developed by SUPRO with assistance from the David Bowie Archive, the David Bowie Limited Edition Dual Tone is based on the main guitar he played on his Reality album and throughout his final world tour, 'A Reality Tour', in 2003-2004.

Although he played a variety of guitars throughout his career, Bowie enjoyed a special relationship with the iconic vintage 60s Supro Dual Tone he had customised to his specifications.

ONE MAGICAL MOMENT
23rd January 2018

On this day, 42 years ago, DAVID BOWIE released his STATION TO STATION album in 1976.

There's something I've discovered and been sat on since 1st December, so what better day than today to reveal it to the world.

In my never-ending quest for David Bowie knowledge, I am currently focusing my research specifically around the 'Station To Station' album. This usually consists of browsing through all my bookmarks and years and years of scribbled notes on Kabbalah, Arthur Edward Waite, Dion Fortune, Oswald Mosley brownshirts, Dan Brown, Edward Burne-Jones, astral flights with silver stripes, Sephiroth, The Tree of Life, Gnosticism, Paganism, Externsteine at Horn-Bad Meinberg in Germany, Arthurian legend, any direct references David made in various interviews, and so on. You get the picture.

I'm not sure if the stars were aligned correctly that day, but unbelievably, I got two more coincidental WTF Bowie moments in just three days. This was the first one.

One particular thing has really confused and bothered me for the past 42 years...

Why was the typography on the 'Station To Station' album sleeve created with no word spaces?

I've professionally worked in graphics and the print industry for over 40 years, and it might not seem a big deal now, but back in 1976 this lack of word spaced lettering was very, very peculiar and rather unsettling. I'd never seen anything like it before and nether had anyone else.

I'm sure you'll know the story that the full colour album sleeve was rejected by David. At the time he stated something about "the sky not looking real". I think what he really meant by that comment was that the red lettering over the sky didn't quite visually work. Hence we got red typeface with lots and lots of white space and a mono photograph.

David Bowie Station To Station

I've been searching and searching ever since to no avail.

Then last month it hit me, like a ton of bricks. Right there, staring me in the face from across the room. I nearly fell off the settee!

Now I'm not going to start preaching Kabbalah, so I'll just let everyone make their own conclusions.

Look at the back cover of the Station To Station album. See the tracklisting? Blur your eyes slightly, and what do you see?

Hidden in plain sight is that a chalice? The Holy Grail? The Kabbalah Holy Cup of Life?

Obviously we know David was visualising a new beginning with this album, specifically so with his hymn 'Word On A Wing', which tells you really all you need to know.

David Bowie Station To Station  David Bowie Station To Station

David Bowie Station To Station

Whether this Kabbalah 'Cup of Life' or chalice was intentional or not, I guess we'll never know. Either way, it's pretty cool.

One thing I do know for sure is, if I would have discovered this a couple of years earlier and emailed to ask him if it was intended, he would have said one of two things:

'Yes. Well done. Give that man a cigar!'

or

'No. But it is now!'

BOWIEWONDERWORLD IS 21 TODAY
8th January 2018

Little Wonderworld Today is also BowieWonderworld's birthday - now twenty-one years online!

Thank you to everyone who helps support the site - it is appreciated more than you'll ever know :)

For those not aware, this web site was first set up as a 50th birthday present for David.

It started life as Little Wonder, then Little Wonderworld on Virgin Net Freespace. The website name was taken from the name of his secret gig at the Hanover Grand, London back in 1997.

I originally wanted the website name BowieWorld but David and Ultrastar also wanted that name for a special virtual 3D chatroom BowieWorld he was about to launch. I obviously gave in and promised not to register it, and let them do their thing.

They never registered that domain name as it became part of Worlds.com in the end (and neither did I, keeping my promise). Eventually a fan in New Zealand did register it and put up some pages.

I patiently waited for the bowieworld.com site to close, and for the domain name to become available again (as the vast majority have over the years) and then claimed it in 2012.

I don't know why I registered it, I've done nothing with it yet. Let's just put it down to sentimental reasons.

BOWIE'S BRIXTON: SPECIAL ONE-OFF EVENT
4th January 2018

Bowie's Brixton David Bowie Musical Walking Tour Presents... BOWIE'S BRIXTON: a guided tour of Brixton's most popular landmarks among Bowie fans and an exclusive panel talk with the people behind them!

Every year hundreds of David Bowie fans make the pilgrimage to Brixton to lay flowers and tributes beside the famous mural painted by Jimmy C. But that is not the only landmark to draw Bowie fans from across the globe onto Brixton's streets.

A recent poll by London's Original David Bowie Musical Walking Tour revealed that - excluding the mural - more than half of the David Bowie fans who visit Brixton want to glimpse the house where Bowie was born.

54% of those surveyed cited the house on Stansfield Road as their biggest incentive for visiting the district.

The recent poll also found that 21% of fans visit Brixton to get their hands on a Brixton £10 note; legal tender which features a portrait of Bowie's Aladdin Sane character taken by the late photographer Brian Duffy. The image used was shot during the same photo session as the portrait that inspired Brixton's Bowie mural.

Photofusion Gallery on Electric Lane, which hosted the historical Silhouettes and Shadows Bowie Exhibition in September 2016, attracts 16% of fans while 9% chose standing in Windrush Square outside the Ritzy Cinema (where a huge tribute party was held on the night of Bowie's death in 2016) as a prominent reason for coming to Brixton.

NICK STEPHENSON, who launched London's Original David Bowie Musical Walking Tour on what would have been the singer's 70th birthday last year, has hosted hundreds of fans from as far as Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and across the United States, Asia and Europe.

Nick comments: "In the year that I have been running these walking tours of Brixton I have found that there are many reasons for Bowie fans to want to experience a guided tour of David Bowie's early life in his hometown."

"There are also some rarely celebrated landmarks on route that capture visitors' imaginations, particularly when brought to life with renditions of his wonderful songs, for example the crowds always sing along heartily to Rebel Rebel outside David's first school.

"This year I wanted to breathe even more life into those major stopping points of the tour, so have brought in some help from several key figures connected to Bowie's life and career."

On 8th January Nick Stephenson is hosting a special event to mark the legendary singer's 71st birthday. In addition to the 2-hour tour of various sites that relate to Bowie's life and death, London's Original David Bowie Musical Walking Tour has organised a panel talk with audience Q&A in the Ritzy Cinema, featuring VIP special guest panellists, including Bowie's school friend, former band mate and cover art designer GEORGE UNDERWOOD.

George designed the album sleeves for Hunky Dory and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars.

Joining Mr. Underwood is Chris Duffy/Sandie Goodman from The Duffy Archive (representing the late photographer Brian Duffy), who will be presenting George Underwood with a special print at the event.

Brixton Pound designer Charlie Waterhouse, the man responsible for creating a £10 note featuring David Bowie's portrait, will also be a guest panellist alongside Simon Parkes, who is known for buying the Brixton Academy - a popular photo spot of the tour - for just £1 and turning into one of London's most iconic music venues where he also organised for David Bowie to perform in 1991.

Other panellists are Wendy Faulkner, organiser of Bowie's Beckenham Oddity, and the man behind the 20,000-strong Instagram fandom LegoDavidBowieIs.

Tickets can be purchased from eventbrite.co.uk at £30 per person.

Landmark areas of the tour include:
David Bowie Mural - Discover the story behind the mural.
Bowie's Birthplace and Primary School - School days and family life for the young David Robert Jones.
The Ritzy Cinema - Where hundreds of fans gathered to pay their respects on 11th January 2016.
The Brixton Academy - discover what happened when David Bowie returned to Brixton for a homecoming show!
Photofusion Gallery - The very best in social photography from around Britain including a recent David Bowie exhibition.

Songs included on the tour (in order) are: Space Oddity / Suffragette City / Ashes To Ashes / The Man Who Sold The World / Rebel Rebel / Starman / The Jean Genie / Life On Mars?

The tour and panel talk take place on 8th January starting at 10am and 1pm.
