Over the last few years, they have been working on a project to explore the archives of MainMan and share with the world the amazing story of how this ground-breaking management rights company changed the face of rock 'n' roll fifty years ago when entrepreneur and impresario TONY DEFRIES met the struggling young singer, songwriter DAVID BOWIE and they embarked on an amazing journey that went on to define the hedonism and excesses of the early 70s.

Each week they will release a new episode in their podcast series featuring behind the scenes stories from those who lived and breathed this incredibly evocative period in rock history and the website will be home to a continually expanding collection of fascinating memorabilia from the MainMan vaults - much of it never seen before.

KANSAI YAMAMOTO - REST IN PEACE
27th July 2020

Kansai Yamamoto Japanese fashion designer KANSAI YAMAMOTO has sadly passed away, aged 76-years-old, from acute myeloid leukemia on 21st July.

His daughter Mirai Yamamoto announced the sad news today on her Instagram account:

On July 21st, my father, Kansai Yamamoto, passed away at the age of 76. He left this world peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.

In my eyes, my father was not only the eclectic and energetic soul that the world knew him as, but someone who was also thoughtful, kind-hearted, and affectionate. He valued communication and showered me with love throughout my entire life.

He also taught me to persist throughout failures and to never let go of a positive, forward-looking mindset. He viewed challenges as opportunities for self-development and always believed in the brighter days ahead.

I want to thank everyone who has touched my father's life in some way, shape, or form. Without you, his legacy would not exist.

I will continue supporting this legacy of my father through my work at KANSAI SUPER STUDIO, alongside my acting career. In doing so, I hope to spread Kansai Yamamoto's spirit of 'Genki' to the world.

Sincerely, Mirai Yamamoto.

Kansai launched his own company in Tokyo in 1971 and his first fashion collection debuted in Tokyo/London that same year. He was renowned for designing the costumes that would be worn by DAVID BOWIE notably during his Ziggy Stardust / Aladdin Sane characters.

Check out the two clips below from that 1971 Tokyo/London International fashion show. This segments shows the use of kuroko, traditional kabuki stagehands, to assist with 'hayagawari', quick costume change, which Bowie also utilised in his stage shows. Also will you obviously see where Bowie got his hair-do inspiration from.

Rest in peace - Kansai Yamamoto (8th February 1944 - 21st July 2020).

MATT DAY - REST IN PEACE
26th July 2020

Matt Day Matt Day Incredibly sad news to report that mega DAVID BOWIE fan MATT DAY passed away in his sleep, aged 44.

Matt was well known amongst Bowie fans worldwide. Just like his parents, he lived and breathed Bowie. His generosity, humour and kind nature will be sadly missed. He was truly one in a million.

Sending sincere and heartfelt condolences to his parents Gillie and Harry, all his family, friends and colleagues.

His best friend Gareth has sent me a few of their treasured memories from over the years which I think need reading to give you a sense of their humour and dedication...

One of many claims to Bowie fame took place during the performance of 'The Hearts Filthy Lesson' on the Outside Tour in Cardiff. As many of you will know who attended gigs on that tour, fans threw all sorts onstage. When Bowie performed 'We Prick You' and he got to the line 'where have all the flowers gone', some fans would throw flowers on stage. Well, Matt, Gill and Gareth had a Father Christmas hat, as it was late November... they threw that onstage during 'The Hearts Filthy Lesson'... Bowie laughs and sings 'what a fantastic Santa's hat'! That was Matt... which can be heard on the audio recording if you take a listen.

Also during the song 'We Prick You', Bowie sings 'toys, toys, little white toys', so they throw a white cuddly Power Rangers toy up on stage. The next song Nite Flights starts and Bowie picks it up and uses the doll against the stage lights to create this ambient, floating silhouette throughout the intro.

Matt Day Matt was THE first to have the Blackstar tattooed on his wrist, the very same day the image was released online. This was acknowledged by the artist Jonathan Barnbrook, he was so chuffed.

For the 1989 Tin Machine gig at Newport Centre, Matt was 12-years-old. He queued on a 3-day vigil with his Uncle Colin outside the venue to make sure they were first to get tickets. This made the local news (see newspaper cutting). His life intertwined around Bowie.

Matt and Gareth even created an ambitious short lived fanzine 'Called Such A Wonderful Person', then later a mail order newsletter 'Bowie News'.

Wherever they went to see Bowie, Matt, Gill and Harry always caught David's attention. Just from sheer audible passion and in their total love and devotion, which started with his father and engrossed them all, giving them great times and happy memories.

Rest in peace Matthew Day (13th July 1976 - 23rd July 2020) - you will be truly missed.

On this day, 33 years ago, DAVID BOWIE performed at Stade de l'Ouest, Nice, France in 1987 during his Glass Spider World Tour...

Sharing the double bill were Aquila. The band only released one album on RCA. If you've got a spare 48 minutes take a listen. Not my cup of tea, but from 39.17 onwards it gets rather interesting. On the 'Third Movement: Where Do I Belong, Aquila (Conclusion)', can you imagine David Bowie singing this? - [Listen here]...

MORRISSEY & BOWIE COSMIC DANCER
2nd July 2020

MORRISSEY has requested that the footage from his 1991 LA gig at the Forum with DAVID BOWIE who joined him onstage for a duet of MARC BOLAN's 'Cosmic Dancer' be available.

This is the HQ time-stamped film and includes previously unseen backstage footage.

"We hadn't rehearsed the song. David called me at my hotel and we tried to duet down the phone, which became very funny because David couldn't remember the words, but on the night it was me who forgot and David remembered. You can see a slight disapproval from him when I repeat and repeat the wrong lines ... his look says 'you shouldn't be singing that bit again'. This clip is my 4th favorite memory of David. It's nice that Ron and Russell are in there too, but Russell looks irked ... I expect he was missing the concluding sequel of that night's Columbo.":

I'M ONLY DANCING FOR RSD 2020
1st July 2020

Update: All Bowie releases are out next month on the first of the three rescheduled RSD dates on 29th August, apart from OST: The Turning - The Turning: Kate's Diary which is released on 24th October.

Record Store Day 2020 has now been further postponed worldwide and now takes place on three different dates: 29th August, 26th September and 24th October due to the safety of the general public.

RSD 2020 sees the release of previously unissued live 1974 recordings of DAVID BOWIE entitled: I'M ONLY DANCING (THE SOUL TOUR 74) on 2 LP Vinyl and 2 CD formats released for RECORD STORE DAY 2020 on 20th June.

DAVID BOWIE - RECORD STORE DAY 2020 - NEVER BEFORE HEARD 1974 LIVE RECORDINGS UNEARTHED:

'I'M ONLY DANCING (THE SOUL TOUR 74)' (2 LP / 2 CD) LIMITED EDITION RECORD STORE DAY 2020 RELEASE

In addition to the previously announced Record Store Day 2020 release of CHANGESNOWBOWIE, Parlophone Records are proud to also announce the unearthing of never before heard recordings of David Bowie in concert in 1974 in the form of I'M ONLY DANCING (THE SOUL TOUR 74) on 2 LP and 2 CD.

I'm Only Dancing Taken from recently discovered sources in The David Bowie Archive®, I'M ONLY DANCING (THE SOUL TOUR 74) was recorded mostly during David's performance at the Michigan Palace, Detroit on 20th October 1974, with the encores taken from the Municipal Auditorium, Nashville on 30th November 1974. The only song missing from the full set on the 20th October performance is 'Diamond Dogs' which was unfortunately only recorded in part. To make up for that it was decided to include the encores from the 30th November performance which featured 'Diamond Dogs' but also enables a fuller representation of the set from The Soul Tour including such numbers as 'Knock On Wood' and the 'Foot Stomping' / 'I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate' medley.

The Soul Tour was a radical departure from the first part of the 1974 Diamond Dogs theatrical extravaganza. During a three week break in late 1974, the Diamond Dogs Tour's elaborate six-ton Hunger City stage set was drastically stripped back, and the tour's set list overhauled to include as-yet-unreleased tracks from the Young Americans sessions at Sigma Sound in Philadelphia. The Soul Tour also featured a revamped band, augmented to include musicians and vocalists from those sessions, and rechristened The Mike Garson Band.

I'M ONLY DANCING (THE SOUL TOUR 74) follows on from the previous Record Store Day 2 LP release Cracked Actor (Live Los Angeles '74) and is an incredible historical document of a performer and band at the height of their live powers. The artwork for both the 2 LP and 2 CD releases is based on the original design for the programmes available at venues for dates on The Soul Tour. The Soul Tour has taken on a mythical status among Bowie fans, as the tour visited fewer than twenty cities in the East and South of US. This is the first time that audio from this incarnation of the tour has ever been officially released.
