BOWIE ODYSSEY 70
29th October 2020

Bowie Odyssey 70 by Simon Goddard New book BOWIE ODYSSEY 70 by SIMON GODDARD, is a 192-page paperback is released published today.

Synopsis: He starts the decade a teenage pop idol. But the one-hit wonder who sang 'Space Oddity' is still very far from becoming the star who will one day define the 1970s. Not when he still has a band to find, a manager to sack, a mentally ill brother to save, a wife to marry and a rival called Marc Bolan to beat. Not when David Bowie still has no idea who or what David Bowie is.

Starting at the beginning of Bowie's incredible ten-year odyssey changing the course of pop music, Simon Goddard's bold and expressionistic biography weaves time, space, rock 'n' roll and social history to relive Bowie's 1970 moment by vivid moment.

About the author: Simon Goddard was born in Cardiff in 1971. He grew up in Wales and Scotland and went to art school in the North of England before becoming a music journalist in London. He is the author of six books including Songs That Saved Your Life (hailed by The Guardian as "the best Smiths book"), Mozipedia (a Mojo Readers' Book Of The Year), Ziggyology: A Brief History of Ziggy Stardust, Simply Thrilled, the mock-picaresque biographical novel Rollaresque ("an excellent history of the early years of The Rolling Stones" - The Times) and The Comeback: Elvis and the Story of the '68 Special.

A BOWIE CELEBRATION 2021
27th October 2020

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: 6:00AM (PACIFIC), TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2020

David Bowie Pianist Mike Garson Announces a Star-Studded Birthday Concert for the Rock Legend

Mike Garson's A Bowie Celebration: Just for one day!

Livestreams on January 8, 2021 at 6pm PT; will be available to watch for 24 hours to follow.

In 2016, the legendary David Bowie left this planet far too soon. In 2020, the live music industry was shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic. On January 8th, 2021, a star-studded group of musicians and vocalists - including those who grew up with his music as well as his friends and bandmates who worked with him and knew him best - will come together on the weekend of the fifth anniversary of Bowie's passing and what would have been his birthday to reconnect, heal, and share the music that has meant so much to so many.

Mike Garson and producers Stacey Sher and Kerry Brown have joined forces with Rolling Live Studios to produce A Bowie Celebration: Just for one day! bringing together dozens of Bowie alumni band members spanning Bowie's career from his 1969 self-titled album to his final album, Blackstar, along with many of the world's most famous voices for a very special experience. The concert will feature performances from William Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins), Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Bowie's good friend and Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman, Gavin Rossdale (Bush), Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction), Joe Elliott (Def Leppard), Grammy-winning singer Macy Gray, Ian Astbury (The Cult), Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Gail Ann Dorsey (David Bowie, Lenny Kravitz), Bernard Fowler (Rolling Stones), Corey Glover (Living Color), Tony-winning rocker Lena Hall, vocal phenom Judith Hill (Grammy winner for 20 Feet From Stardom ), and many more to be announced.

A Bowie Celebration 2021 As Bowie's longest and most frequent band member, Mike Garson played on dozens of Bowie albums and performed in 1,000 concerts with the rocker, including both Bowie's first and final performance in the United States. When Garson's most recent A Bowie Celebration tour was abruptly stopped mid-tour as the pandemic devastated the live music industry, Garson began looking for the best way to keep the music playing and the celebration of Bowie and his legacy to continue. He began reaching out to artists and alumni about a very special virtual experience for the fans despite the world looking so different than before. "I reached out to friends who had played with David, people who grew up listening to him, those he inspired and influenced. Artist after artist I spoke with each immediately understood my vision and enthusiastically said yes to taking part in this special show," Garson said. "That's the magic of David's legacy. Like many of the great and timeless songwriters before him - George Gershwin, Cole Porter - David left the world with an amazing and enduring library of music and this is the perfect time to be able to share that music in such a unique and cathartic way."

Alumni members of Bowie's bands from throughout his career will join the event including David's final touring band of Mike Garson, Gail Ann Dorsey, Earl Slick, Sterling Campbell Gerry Leonard and Catherine Russell along with Zack Alford, Carlos Alomar, Kevin Armstrong, Alan Childs, Robin Clark, Emm Gryner, Omar Hakim, Clare Hirst, Erdal Kizilçay, Tim Lefebvre, Martha Mooke, Holly Palmer, Mark Plati, Carmine Rojas, Charlie Sexton, Bowie's long-time record producer and musician Tony Visconti, and many more will collaborate with Garson's special guest vocalists for a setlist of some of Bowie's most memorable hit songs along with a collection of deep cut Bowie gems.

"What we're planning is an amazing show with the most talented musicians from every period of David's career, as well as phenomenal artists from many different genres," said Garson. "We'll hear different interpretations of David's songs; some with totally new arrangements that have never been heard before."

Garson adds that additional vocalists and alumni band members will be announced soon and suggests that fans "stay tuned for more exciting announcements to come!"

Tickets are on sale now at rollinglivestudios.com/bowie with early-bird pricing offered through Sunday, November 1. A variety of VIP ticket bundles are available offering fans a variety of exclusive opportunities and merchandise including everything from access to private rehearsals to access to pre-show soundcheck and an after-show Q&A with members of the band.

For anyone who is still unsure about the 'fridge' / 'bridge' opening line of DAVID BOWIE's 'Young Americans' song, have a listen here and let's end this once and for all...

ON THIS DAY...
20th October 2020

On this day, 17 years ago, DAVID BOWIE performed the first of two gigs at Palais Omnisports, Bercy, Paris, France during his A Reality World Tour in 2003...

On this day, 18 years ago, DAVID BOWIE performed at the Beacon Theatre, Broadway, New York, USA during his Heathen Tour in 2002. David named this last leg 'The New York Marathon Tour', as they were playing in each of New York City's five boroughs. He said: "I could get home from all the gigs on roller skates."...

On this day, 19 years ago, DAVID BOWIE performed at the 'Concert for New York City' Benefit show at Madison Square Garden, New York City in 2001. David performed two songs, Paul Simon's 'America' and his own anthemic classic "Heroes"...

On this day, 24 years ago, DAVID BOWIE performed the second of two shows for The Bridge School Benefit Concert at the Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, California, USA. This acoustic and bottle caps show for the Neil Young Charity saw David perform, alongside Reeves Gabrels and Gail Ann Dorsey in 1996...

On this day, 37 years ago, DAVID BOWIE performed the first of three shows at the Budokan Arena in Tokyo, Japan during his 1983 Serious Moonlight World Tour...

On this day, 46 years ago, DAVID BOWIE performed at the Michigan Palace in Detroit, USA during his 'Soul/Philly Dogs' Tour in 1974...

On this day, 47 years ago, saw the final day of filming by NBC TV of The Midnight Special. DAVID BOWIE's 'The 1980 Floor Show' was filmed over three days at The Marquee, in Soho, London in 1973. In reality, live performance-wise... this was 'Ziggy's Last Stand'...

On this day, 48 years ago, DAVID BOWIE and The Spiders From Mars played the first of two gigs at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA, USA in 1972.

This first show was broadcast live on a local FM radio station and also recorded by RCA Records for a planned Ziggy Stardust live double album. The shows at Boston and Santa Monica were also recorded and the artwork created by George Underwood.

The live FM radio broadcast introduced by Steve Martin went as follows: "Steve Martin here, backstage at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. It's a cool night in Los Angeles, and as you may know or not know, the Santa Monica Civic is about a hundred yards from the beach so we have a cool breeze blowing off the ocean through the stage at our backs. The auditorium is packed, as a matter of fact, for the first David Bowie concert in the Los Angeles area. There will be one more tomorrow night, this is the concert tonight which will be recorded by RCA for the next David Bowie album and we expect to hear some new material by this British superstar. David and his group, the Spiders From Mars will enter from the other side of the stage. The auditorium is completely blacked out except for flashing strobe lights. Now the entrance music will be the Ode, or should I say the Ode To Joy which is featured in the movie A Clockwork Orange and the house lights are starting to dim... here's David Bowie." - [More details]...

On this day, 52 years ago, TURQUOISE performed at The Country Club, Haverstock Hill, Hampstead, London NW3. The short-lived mixed-media trio Turquoise were: DAVID BOWIE, Hermione Farthingale and Tony Hill. Also appearing at this 1968 Time Out/Free Bank Benefit gig were: Third Ear Band, Doris Henderson, George Smith and Mike Vernon, Pegasus Blues, Mimi and Mouse, Simon Stable and Pete Drummond on Plastic Dream Machine, plus others.

David had placed an advertisement in the International Times way back in June. It stated 'David Bowie needs acoustic guitarist singing/speaking for exciting project, must be alive'. The name 'Turquoise' lasted for only a small number of appearances before Tony Hill's final performance. Tony left to join 'High Tide', a group that David was later to support. His replacement was ex-Buzz member John 'Hutch' Hutchinson. Shortly after the name was changed to FEATHERS...

ON THIS DAY...
14th October 2020

On this day, 30 years ago, DAVID BOWIE and IMAN had their first ever date in Los Angeles, USA in 1990. The blind-date was set up by their mutual friend and hairdresser Teddy Antolin...

On this day, 43 years ago, DAVID BOWIE released his "Heroes" album. Recorded at Hansa Tonstudio, Berlin in July and August of 1977, this is the only true album of the so-called "Berlin Trilogy". Produced by Tony Visconti and David Bowie, the album also featured: Carlos Alomar, Dennis Davis, George Murray, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp and Antonia Maass.

RCA marketed the album with the blurbs: "Tomorrow belongs to those who can hear it coming" and "There's Old Wave. There's New Wave. And there's David Bowie..." It reached number #3 in the UK and stayed in the charts for a total of 26 weeks. Both the NME and Melody Maker named it as their 'Album of the Year'. Surely, the highest praise came from JOHN LENNON who stated in a 1980 interview - whilst recording his 'Double Fantasy' album - that his ambition was to "do something as good as "Heroes"."

HEROES - BOWIE by SUKITA
2nd October 2020

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: The legend of DAVID BOWIE in a hundred shots

From 10 October in Palermo, Palazzo Sant'Elia hosts the photographic exhibition Heroes - Bowie by Sukita

Palermo, 10 October 2020 - 31 January 2021

Sant'Elia Palace - Palermo

"It was 1972 that I started it. And I'm still looking for David Bowie even now." - (Masayoshi Sukita)

Heroes - Bowie by Sukita Over 100 portraits of David Bowie, some exhibited in national preview, to retrace the partnership between the pop legend and the great Japanese master Masayoshi Sukita, probably the most important photographer with whom Bowie has ever worked.

'Heroes - Bowie by Sukita' arrives in Palermo, from Saturday 10 October to Sunday 31 January in the majestic halls of Palazzo Sant'Elia. An interesting experiment that will create a fascinating short circuit between the visionary and very personal, absolutely contemporary, trait of Sukita, the elegance and the baroque halls of an eighteenth-century noble palace.

The retrospective - promoted and organised by OEO Firenze Art and Le Nozze di Figaro with the Sant'Elia Foundation - is curated by Ono Arte Contemporanea on the patronage of the Municipality of Palermo and the Metropolitan City of Palermo; communication office MLC Comunicazione; inserted in the Le Vie dei Tesori circuit.

The collaborative relationship between the two protagonists was born in 1972 when the photographer arrived in London to immortalise Marc Bolan and T.Rex and, although unaware of who David Bowie was, decides to go to one of his concerts because he was irresistibly attracted by the poster that he promoted and depicted him with one leg up, on a black background. They get to know each other thanks to the stylist Yasuko Takahashi, and Bowie's manager arranges a shoot. Bowie is struck by Sukita's style and, although the service proceeds in complete silence due to the language barrier, something clicks between the two, a common feeling based on continuous artistic research that leads to the birth of a professional and human relationship that would last until upon Bowie's passing in 2016.

The exhibition catalogue is published by OEOFirenze.

Venue address:
Palazzo Sant'Elia, Via Maqueda 81, 90133 Palermo PA, Italy.

Opening times:
Tuesday to Friday from 9am-5.30pm
Saturday and Sunday 10am-8pm
Closed Mondays

For more details and ticket information, visit the fondazionesantelia.it website.

Originally titled Metrobolist, the album's name was changed at the last minute to The Man Who Sold The World - the original stereo master tapes were in fact labelled Metrobolist, with the title ultimately crossed out. The 2020 re-release of the album under its Metrobolist moniker has been remixed by original producer Tony Visconti, with the exception of the track 'After All' which Tony considered perfect as is, and is featured in its 2015 remaster incarnation.

The Metrobolist 50th anniversary artwork has been created by Mike Weller who was behind the originally intended album artwork which Mercury refused to release. The gatefold sleeve also features many images from the infamous Keith MacMillan Mr. Fish 'dress' shoot at Haddon Hall which would cause so much controversy when one of the shots was used on the cover of the The Man Who Sold The World album in the rest of the world in spring of 1971.

The original U.S. release of The Man Who Sold The World utilised some of the original Metrobolist design elements.

As with the Space Oddity 50th anniversary vinyl, as well as a 180g black vinyl edition, it will come in 2020 limited edition handwritten numbered copies on gold vinyl (# 1971 - 2020) and on white vinyl (# 1 - 1970) all randomly distributed.

For the 50th anniversary the 1970 story of the gatefold sleeve can be told in full with unused 'dress' photos. As Mike Weller explains:

"There is a story concealed in the carpet-scattered playing cards, David has thrown a plain 52 card deck in the air as though "casting the runes" but in a significant break from 60s Tarot divinations such as I Ching etc he casts runes using a four-suit pack and switches man-dress, along with the Court Card of the Future from right hand to left, signifying a new decade and new cultural era."

David personally delivered the Metrobolist concept and his gatefold plan to the record company for production and now with this release, it can finally be seen much closer to its original concept. Bowie speaking in 2000 said of the sleeve imagery:

"Mick Weller devised this kind of very subversive looking cartoon and put in some quite personalised things. The building in the background on the cartoon in fact was the hospital where my half-brother had committed himself to. So for me, it had lots of personal resonance about it."
